Youth Train in Trades
This hands on and post-secondary technical training program are dual credit programs offered in partnership with a Post-Secondary University and SkilledTradesBC. There is a work experience aspect to this course. Students who successfully complete this program earn graduation credits and post-secondary credentials while also earning apprenticeship hours towards their level 1.
The study skills, communication skills, employ-ability skills, work experience skills practiced and learned are very valuable in transitioning students from school to the workplace or to post-secondary.
OVERVIEWS OF PROGRAMS
The Automotive Service Technician program is taught at Chatelech Secondary School under the instruction of a Red Seal Automotive Service Journeyman. School District 46 is partnered with a post-secondary school to offer this Level 1 Foundation Apprenticeship Course.
This course is full time first semester and students complete 16 credits towards graduation. The students will be prepared to write the SkilledTradesBC Automotive Service Technician Level One exam at the end of the course and they need 70% to earn this standing. Students will be signed up as a pre-apprentice and have earned 450 hours of level one technical training that count toward level one hours.
- Time: 5 months Sept.-Jan
- High School Credits: 16
- Final SkilledTradesBC Theory Exam 70% required to pass the course for Level 1 certification
This program is housed at Elphinstone Secondary where students work in the Cougar Café under the supervision of a Red Seal Chef from Vancouver Community College to complete this Foundation Apprenticeship Course. Students who have completed this program have gone on to work in some of the best restaurants on the coast, in Vancouver and throughout the province.
- 16 credits: TRN 12A, 12B, 12C, and 12D
- Time: 5 months Sept-Jan
- Level One 620 Technical Hours Completed to be used for Level 1
- Final SkilledTradesBC Practical test pass/fail and SkilledTradesBC Theory Test require 70% to pass

The Carpentry program is taught by a Red Seal Journeyman Carpenter. School District 46 is partnered with a post-secondary school to offer this Level 1 Foundation Apprenticeship Course.
The course is full time second semester and students complete 16 credits towards graduation. The students will be registered as pre-apprentice and have earned 420 hours of level one technical training that count toward level one hours.

- Time: 5 months second semester Feb.-June
- Work Experience: Yes with construction companies throughout the course
- Level One Technical Hours Completed to be used for Level 1
- High School Credits: 16
- Students are required to earn higher than 70% on each unit through the course to earn Level 1 certification.
